After breaking up with SNL comedian Pete Davidson (who proposed to her after four weeks of dating) on a probably unfriendly note, pop star Ariana Grande released a new single called "thank u, next" which name checks him as well as her other exes: rapper Big Sean, former backup dancer Ricky Alvarez (who she was with in her donut-licking daze), and the late rapper Mac Miller (Malcolm McCormick). But, as it turns out, she was pretty upbeat about all of them.
“Thought I’d end up with Sean/But he wasn’t a match," she sings. "Wrote songs about Ricky/Now I listen and laugh/Even almost got married/And for Pete, I’m so thankful/Wish I could say ‘thank you’ to Malcolm/‘Cause he was an angel."
Ricky posted a humorous response on his Instagram Stories that a user luckily grabbed and put on their Instagram feed so it won't expire.
Refinery 29 speculated that Ariana wrote three songs about Ricky: "True Love" (sample line: "I'm your moonlight, you're my star and nothing's shining more than you, boy"), "Moonlight" ("He's giving me Elvis, with some James Dean in his eye"), and the presumed breakup track "Forever Boy" ("I, see right through you, boy. And I, I ain't feeling you no more").
Shortly after the song's release over the weekend, Pete Davidson spoke about his ex on Saturday Night Live, saying "The last thing I will say is I know some of you are curious about the break-up. The truth is it’s nobody’s business, and sometimes things just don’t work out. And that’s OK. She’s a wonderful, strong person, and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.” The comment was reportedly run by Lorne Michaels at the last minute, and happened because Pete heard the song as well.
While many people speculated that only two of her exes heard the song, remember that she wasn't asked specifically "Did Pete Davidson hear the song?" so there are no signs that point to him not hearing of it ahead of time, just like Ricky and Sean.
